reunited.

i decided to make the most of out of my memorial day weekend by taking a little trip up to bellingham (also known as "yellingham", "B-Ham", "bell-lame-ham", etc.) to see one of my oldest and best friends, the one and only miss carly roberts.
although my visit was short, it was sweet. we covered a lot of ground with the time we had. i got to see the adorable house she lives in from the '20s. i love old houses - they have such cool design features and are so quaint.

highlights include:

  • Casa Que Pasa -- an amazing Mexican food place - home of the potato burrito. and pure joy.
  • walking around downtown bellingham
  • getting Woods coffee - my favorite northern treat (four words: white chocolate raspberry scone. divine.)
  • 3 trips to fred meyer - one included buying two cartons of ice cream (one of them being spumoni - our favorite.)
  • watching bridesmaids AND mean girls
  • swinging on swings (and getting more mosquito bites than i can count....NOT a highlight)
  • catching up on our lives

as you can see, it doesn't take much to entertain us. no going out. no dressing up. just a girls night. i think that true friends don't need fancy plans to really have a good time.
i forget what it's like talking/hanging out with someone who has known me for so long, and so thoroughly. she truly is one of a kind. and now i'm going to stop before i start getting emotional.....

i didn't take many photos, but here are a couple that pretty accurately describe us/the night.

and here's a OLDIE (but a goodie) from 10th grade.

love you, carls barkley aka carlyfornia aka carly fry.
here's to us.

SEWper fun.

if you weren't already aware, i'm taking a basic clothing construction class. even though i'm a merchandising major, and not a design major, both majors have to take it. (along with flat pattern design -- that should be a hoot.)
for our midterm project, we had to make a bag. we didn't really have any guidelines, with the exceptions that it had to be something challenging - but doable at the same time. okay, so i had to redo this after i turned it in, but i ended up with a 95/100. i'm pretty proud of it, as you can see. the majority of this was done in one 10-hour sitting with no food (which i do not recommend), no bathroom breaks (which i also do not recommend) and little sleep. i was in the sewing lab until 3am...completely neglecting to study for my sewing midterm. yep...we had a test the same day that our bag was due. still scratching my head on that one...
in the end, i ended up with broken phone, deliriousness/famishment (i made that word up, get over it) due to lack of sleep, but most importantly......something i was really proud of. i made this bag. with my own hands!! and it's functional! sewing has proved to be EXTREMELY challenging, but i can see my improvement since i started at the beginning of the quarter, and this is definitely a lifelong skill that i'm sure i'll be happy to have later in life. (one day, i took in two shirts that had holes and sewed them up...no big deal.)

and with that, here it is.......

for our final project, we have to make a skirt. mine is a mini-skirt with a center zipper in the back. so far i have cut out the patterns and bought the fabric/zipper. the pattern suggested denim, wool, wool-blend, synthetic leather, or a lightweight fabric. denim was CLEARLY out of the question - ew, same goes for synthetic leather. so i got a wool-blend. houndstooth pattern, with olive green lining. my idea behind these projects is that even if they turn out sucky, at least they have a cute fabric going for them.

here's a little sneak peek of what i have to work with......
i'm definitely going to start this earlier - ie. not 2 days before it's due. i have until june 1st, so i should be fine.

it's almost over - i have 17 days left of the quarter. WOW. hard to believe. anyhow, wish me luck on my newest sewing venture........

holy guacamole.

so, cinco de mayo may have been 12 days ago, but mexican food is good any day. today, hope & i took a little trip to good ol' fred murder (meyer) to get the fixins for homemade guacamole. hope's half mexican side at it's best!

here's where the magic starts:
  • 2 avocados
  • 1 package of guacamole mix (found by right the avocados)
  • a little bit of cilantro

chill for about 30 min in the fridge & BAM. you've got yourself a masterpiece.
these go perfectly with juanita's tortilla chips (also found at fred meyer. or safeway.)
OLE!
